Hartnell College, in Salinas, is one of the oldest educational institutions in California and is renowned for its cultural center.
The recent addition to its campus is the 800-spaces, three-level parking structure, conveniently accessible from the new library, the student center, and all of the academic buildings of the campus.
In addition to standard parking spaces, the parking structure includes spaces that are designated for compact cars, carpooling, and motorcycles, and has bicycle racks on the campus side of the structure.
The parking structure’s design utilizes a structural framing system that entirely spans individual parking bays, allowing column-free, uninterrupted parking space rows. The glass towers invite natural light into the elevator bays. In order to maximize efficiency and minimize cost per space, parking bays provide spaces at ninety degrees to the length of the bays with two-way driving aisles. Thus, circulation options are maximized. Vehicular floor-to-floor circulation is provided via bays with sloping floors rather than relatively short, steep ramps, which aid in the cost-efficiency of the structure.
