Santa Monica Civic Center Parking Structure

Santa Monica, California      Public

The City of Santa Monica, long known for its environmental conscience, wanted a parking structure capable of LEED certification. The parking structure was designed with integrated sustainable features that include photovoltaic roof shade canopies, storm water treatment, a reclaimed-water system, high efficiency mechanical systems and vehicle charging stations. In addition to the 881 spaces within the 8-level structure, there is approximately 10,000 square feet of space for a future café on the second level, as well as office and retail space on the ground and second levels.

The exterior design includes a curtain wall of multi-colored recycled glass panels, giving the structure a unique personality. Sculptures, made of recycled boatyard scrap material were created by a local artist to assist users with wayfinding and can be found throughout the structure. In addition to the multiple sustainable amenities, the parking structure is an integral part of the City’s plan for development of the Civic Center and according to Santa Monica City Council member Kevin KcKeown, “the parking structure is a magnificent start”.

This structure is the first of its kind to be LEED Certified in the western United States.
