The development of lively mixed-use environments in America’s cities has emerged as one of the most important trends in architecture today. The concept of urban place-making, including both new and revitalized downtowns, office complexes, transit villages, and college and university campuses, has become an increasing viable and preferred strategy for development, from both public and private perspectives.

The urban landscape is continually changing. Facilities that used to cater only to local residents can no longer compete unless they address the needs of the more mobile urban populace. Buildings are now designed not only for the primary goals of providing service, but also as part of the architectural fabric of the community enhancing the public image, creating an inviting presence to people from all walks of life.

The architect can no longer create stand-alone monuments, buildings isolated from their neighbors. People-gathering places and developments that create pleasant environments provide the proper venue for interaction for the more socially oriented population. In this age of high technology, the demand for efficiency and constant people interaction has become the norm.

Parking structures are also an integral component of the urban environment. Inviting facades and pleasing, well-lighted facilities provide safe arrival and dispersal points to different activities for visitors and residents. No longer are parking structures built exclusively for vehicles. They are built for the community.
